About the Course

Goal

Take learners from zero Cyrillic to a confident, unscripted speech in русский язык — one of the world's most expressive and precise languages — by building the language through stories, conversation, and context rather than rote memorisation.

Cracking the Code

The journey opens with Кириллица itself — 33 letters sorted into Friends, False Friends, and Strangers — followed by first real reading, survival phrases, and self-introductions. Possession without a "to have" verb, the Genitive of absence, and numbers to 100 introduce Russian's case logic early, before the Prepositional case answers "where?" and unlocks directions. The stage closes with family, gendered adjective agreement, and a Module 1 milestone: ten to fifteen connected sentences, entirely in Russian.

Cases, Time and Motion

The Accusative case brings direct objects, love, and wants into reach, followed by paired interviews and negation. Noun gender, present-tense conjugation, and identification questions lead into the past tense (which changes by gender) and the compound future with быть, capped by a three-tense storytelling lab. The Dative and Instrumental cases deepen emotional and relational expression, before a Module 2 milestone mixes tenses and cases in free conversation. Verbs of motion then distinguish walking from vehicles, one-way trips from habitual journeys, and introduce prefixed motion verbs for travel planning.

Aspect, Fluency and the Capstone

Imperfective versus Perfective aspect: Process against result — is unpacked across present, future, and translation debate. Real-world survival skills follow: shopping, dining, describing illness, advanced listening to authentic podcasts, and extended unscripted conversation. The course concludes with a Russian film watched without English subtitles, a full six-case and motion-verb review, and Итоговая речь — a capstone: an unscripted, three-minute professional speech delivered entirely in Russian, followed by graduation.
